Musical Theatre Writers

Stephanie Jayne Amies & Teddy Clements are an award winning, musical theatre writing team from Southampton.
We have been working together for over 10 years and have a contemporary writing style, influenced by folk music and American musical theatre. We are currently Propel Artists at MAST Mayflower Studios
 (2023-2025)

We are currently working on:
  • 'Sing Your Pain Away' (working title): We are writing a new musical about the health and wellbeing benefits of community singing with playright Beth Flintoff. We were awarded Arts Council England funding in 2022 to kick start the project.
  • 'The Return of IT': we are creating a modernisation of '5 Children and IT' by E Nesbit. We are working alongside ACJ Productions.

Our previous work includes:
  • The Night the War Ended (Comissioned by British Youth Musical Theatre), a musical about Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret sneaking out of the palace to enjoy VE night. Book by Steven Dexter and Nicholas Scrivens.
  • Compass (Commissioned by the Mayflower Theatre for the Mayflower 400 historical commemoration), Obella (a large scale actor-musician piece) and Tomorrow, Maybe (an immersive song-cycle set in a coffee shop – which performed a professional, sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe 2016). Co-Book by Dinos Aristidou.

Virtual Choir

In March 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, we set up an Amies & Clements Virtual Choir, which featured a few of our large-scale harmony pieces.

The first song had 120 applicants, with 96 singers submitting their videos. ‘This Song of Mine’ was performed as part of ‘On Hope, a digital song cycle’. The song cycle was streamed through The Other Palace over three weeks during lockdown, featuring over 60 international composers and over 100 performers, of which we were honoured to be the finale.

 Other Projects

School, Youth Theatre and Higher Education – continuous
During our work as composers we have been lucky enough to gain extensive experience in running school, youth theatre and higher education workshops. As well as work on our own shows (at University of Winchester, University of Portsmouth and Guildford School of Acting) we have run vocal workshops with Southampton Solent and taught on the ‘Vocal and Choral Studies’ course at the University of Winchester for two years. For one year group we were asked to write a bespoke musical for their module, which was performed at the Theatre Royal in Winchester.

We have also been part of several workshops with the Mayflower Theatre Youth groups, and we ran Playmakers Theatre (in Winchester) together for a year.

Live Events and Cabarets –
Our work is often performed at new musical cabaret events. Most recently, we have been part of 'Showtime' new musical theatre evenings at The Stage Door, Southampton:

Our songs were featured on the virtual concert 'The Barn Presents: The Music of Amies & Clements'. Here are some of the Highlights:
